Knowledge starts growing up at the realization of impermanence. Nothingness exists for ever. Everything emerges from and ends in that nothingness.
What we see is not object or person, but function or movement of a group of fundamental energy particles only. For example a pen is but a group of atoms functioning a particular speed. This function starts , continues for sometime and ends in nothingness and then there is no more a pen. For all groups of atoms, we have given different names such as person, object, air, fire, mountain, this and that just for identification or to differentiate it from other thing. If we delete the names all are but mere group of atoms. These atoms which came from nothingness have electrons which become in course of time protons and then later the same atoms become neutrons and at last black hole and nothingness.
Light or darkness - which is great? Darkness. Because that exists permanently. Light comes and remains for certain time and dissolves into darkness. Sound or Silence - which is great? Silence. Because it remains for ever and sounds are just passing clouds in that everlasting silence. In the same way our mind is impermanent but absence of thoughts is permanent. Before and after life what exists? Not mind but thoughtless state.
Nothingness is like ocean and the universe is like waves in it. Waves emerges from the ocean and at last, within short period, mingles into it. Ocean is one but waves are many. Nothingness is one but the universal objects and the groups of atoms are many. Before and after death what remains is true but life is an illusion because only that can remain for ever can be truth, not the one (life) that is impermanent.
Go back in your life and think whether your school-day friends are now with you. Think whether the dress you had worn at your childhood days are at present with you. Are you working or living in the same place where you were doing the same before 10 years? Mostly the answer is No. Understanding Impermanence is the key to release your knowledge from the jail of illusions.
